VIDEO: The jawdropping beauty of Uyuni in the rainy season

The Salar de Uyuni in Southern Bolivia is the world's largest salt pan. In the rainy season it is transformed into an enormous natural mirror which is every photographer's dream. Watch and enjoy... It's been a while since we blogged about one of our newest and most exciting itineraries, but when this incredible video of Uyuni in the rainy season popped up, we knew we had to break the silence. Spanning a total area of more than 10,000km², the Salar de Uyuni near Potosi is one of the trippiest places you'll ever go, and this is ramped up a couple of notches between December and March, when the region receives most of its rain (January is usually the wettest month). In addition to showcasing the natural marvel which is the salt flats in the rainy season, the video is also gives a really good visual summary of all the other aspects of a classic Uyuni itinerary. The only thing it doesn't show are the epic Airstream camper vans that most SA Expeditions guests choose to stay in. Big up to …

Introducing Uyuni: the world’s biggest salt pan

Introducing Uyuni: the world’s biggest salt pan

As a team we’ve been lucky enough to visit some pretty amazing places, but the salt pan outside Uyuni in Southern Bolivia (el Salar de Uyuni) is right up there. In fact, if you’re after otherworldly photo opportunities, a sense of utter desolation and a peek at an extremely fragile ecosystem, there’s no place like it anywhere in the world. In other words, if you’ve always wanted to go to the moon but don’t know anyone at NASA, Uyuni is your next best bet. But more about that later, let’s hit the road… The town of Uyuni is straight out of the Wild West. It’s dusty, and has …

Two great stop-motion videos of Peru and Bolivia

Two great stop-motion videos of Peru and Bolivia

There's nothing quite like a great stop-motion video to get the travel juices flowing. I had lots of fun trying to identify all the locations in the film as the good memories of places as varied as Uyuni and Ica came hurtling back. If you have been to Peru and Bolivia this clip will make you want to return; if you haven't been yet you'll soon be making plans to change this fact. In under two minutes the film-maker Piotr Wancerz is able to showcase some of the amazing diversity in these two Andean heavyweights - and he didn't even spend much time at the beach or in the jungle. If this isn't enough, Piotr was also kind enough to share this adrenalin-pumping bonus track which highlights some of the great adventure sports on offer in Peru and Bolivia. From cycling down Bolivia's 'death road' to dune buggy rides in Huacachina in Peru, this second video's got it all. Thanks also to Pedro Szekely for taking the title image for this post.
