Secondary Categories: CroatiaGuide

Croatia, a land where ancient history meets breathtaking natural beauty, beckons travelers with its diverse landscapes and rich heritage. From the historical wonders of Split's Diocletian's Palace to the ethereal waterfalls and crystal-clear lakes of Plitvice, there’s loads to get excited about.

Split: Where History Comes Alive

Nestled along the sun-kissed shores of the Adriatic Sea, Croatia's second-largest city, is a special spot. Located in the heart of Dalmatia, this vibrant city has a rich heritage dating back to Roman times, making it a treasure trove of historical landmarks and architectural marvels. Here are some of Split’s undisputed highlights.

Diocletian's Palace: This UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as an extraordinary testament to the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century AD as his retirement residence, this colossal palace complex has transcended centuries, evolving into a vibrant living museum. Spanning approximately 320,000 square feet, the palace boasts a unique fusion of architectural styles, blending classical Roman elements with intricate medieval and Renaissance features. Wander through its labyrinthine streets, adorned with ancient columns, ornate sphinx statues, and charming courtyards, each revealing a different facet of history.

One of the palace's most iconic spots is the Peristyle Square, a majestic open courtyard framed by imposing colonnades. Here, you can witness live performances and cultural events against the backdrop of the ancient Cathedral of Saint Domnius, once Diocletian's mausoleum. Diocletian's Palace is not merely a relic of the past; it's a bustling part of Split's modern life, with shops, cafes, and residences nestled within its walls.

Walk up Marjan Hill to viewpoint of Adriatic Sea in Split, Croatia

Marjan Hill: Seek tranquility on Marjan Hill, a lush oasis overlooking the city and the Adriatic Sea. Whether you hike, bike, or relax on a hidden beach, Marjan offers an escape into nature. Hidden chapels and viewpoints along the winding trails, make it a favorite among both locals and visitors.

Top of Form

Riva promenade: Meander along the picturesque Riva promenade, where cafes and shops line the waterfront. Here, you can watch boats sail by and immerse yourself in the Mediterranean ambiance. The palm-lined promenade is the perfect spot for people-watching and taking in panoramic views of the harbor.

Klis Fortress near Split, Croatia
Klis Fortress was built around the 2nd century BC and still stands well-preserved today.

Klis Fortress: For fans of Game of Thrones, Klis Fortress is a must-visit – it is the real-world location of the city of Mereen in series four. This historic stronghold, perched atop a hill, provides a glimpse into medieval history and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Wander through its rugged stone walls, explore the ancient chambers, and imagine the battles that once took place here.

Local cuisine: Relish traditional Dalmatian cuisine at local restaurants. From savory "peka" dishes, where meat or seafood is slow-cooked with vegetables under a metal lid, to the freshest seafood by the waterfront, Croatian cuisine is an unexpected highlight for many visitors.

Plitvice Lakes National Park: Nature's Masterpiece

Located about 60 miles inland, Plitvice Lakes National Park is a true natural wonder. This captivating park is a symphony of cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, lush forests, and abundant wildlife that shows there’s much more to Croatia than islands and coastline.
