How to Visit the Amazon

There are two principal ways to visit the Amazon region regardless of which country will be your gateway: River Cruise or Jungle Lodge. We've established our recommendations through analysis of the available options and incorporating our clients' feedback.

by River Cruise

When traveling by cruise boat, you will be able to explore more remote regions of the rainforest than when staying at a lodge. You will search for the infamous Pink fresh water dolphins and have opportunities to go down the smaller tributaries to view wildlife. Many of our recommended Amazon cruises also include visits with indigenous communities to show how they live and raise questions on how integration with the globalized world may affect their evolution as a culture.

Amazon River Cruise

6 Day Amazon Tour

1 night in Lima, 4 nights on a luxury Amazon cruise boat.

Embrace luxury and wildlife from Iquitos during an Amazon cruise, one of the most coveted ways to explore the rainforest. Keep an eye out for the famous pink river dolphins.

by Jungle Lodge

When visiting one of the numerous luxury lodges you will be able to walk amongst the forest canopy and have more opportunities to explore the jungle by foot. During night hikes the symphony of jungle sounds materializes into a world of giant tarantulas and insects. The private bungalows of the lodges provide slightly more privacy, and the lodge program format enables slightly more flexibility in choosing the types of excursion to embark on.

Amazon Jungle Lodge Tour

6 Day Amazon Tour

1 night in Lima, 4 nights in the Peruvian Amazon.

Immerse yourself in the deep, dense Amazon rainforest, the most bio-diverse place on Earth. During this Amazon adventure you’ll climb into the canopy, ride down the river, and spot exotic wildlife.

For those who prefer a bit more pampering, a journey over 15,000 foot peaks all the while staying in luxury lodges might be your style. Each evening you are greeted by a gourmet meal, jacuzzi and comfortable bed, in a structure that seamlessly blends into the landscape and is operated by locals of the region. We think there is little in the world that matches the adventure and luxury as these Peruvian mountain lodges.

combining with other South America destinations

South America is a very large continent and visiting multiple destinations and countries requires careful logistical planning. We see a few prudent and efficient ways to connect a visit to the Amazon to other main sites in South America. Here are two of our recommended itineraries:
