Best time to visit Rwanda

By SA Explorer | April 4, 2025

Rwanda, known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” offers breathtaking landscapes, rich wildlife, and vibrant culture. The best time to visit depends on the experiences you seek – from gorilla trekking to exploring lush national parks and fascinating museums.

Summer (December to February): Dry season and prime gorilla trekking

Rwanda’s summer months, from December to February, are part of the short dry season, making this an excellent time for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. The weather is stable, and trails are less muddy – ideal for hiking. (Click here to read our comprehensive guide on gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda.)

This season is also great for exploring Nyungwe Forest National Park, home to chimpanzees and other primates, as well as Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s leading safari destination, with wildlife sightings at their best in summer. With warm temperatures and clear skies, it’s a perfect time for photography and outdoor adventures.

Fall (March to May): Lush landscapes and fewer crowds

Fall marks Rwanda’s long rainy season, a time when the already-green landscapes are transformed into a lush paradise. While the rains can make hiking trails more challenging, this is an excellent time for budget-conscious travelers, as lodges offer discounts and parks are less crowded.

Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy this season, as migratory birds arrive, adding to Rwanda’s impressive avian diversity. While gorilla trekking is still possible, expect muddy trails and prepare accordingly.

Winter (June to August): Peak season – for tourists and gorillas

Winter in Rwanda is the long dry season and the most popular time to visit. From June to August, gorilla trekking is at its best, with drier trails and comfortable temperatures in Volcanoes National Park.

It’s also a great time to go on safari in Akagera National Park, with wildlife congregating around water sources, making it easier to spot elephants, lions, and other animals. This is also a fantastic time to visit Lake Kivu – an idyllic inland sea – where you can relax on sandy beaches and enjoy breathtaking scenery.

Spring (September to November): Short rains and wildlife encounters

Spring brings short rains, but they are usually brief and do not significantly impact travel plans. The landscape remains green and vibrant, making it a beautiful time for photography and nature lovers.

Gorilla trekking is still a great experience during this season, as the rains are not as heavy as those during the long wet season. It’s also an excellent time for chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest, as the primates are more active during this period.
