Exploring Europe in winter: A magical and underrated experience

By SA Explorer | February 14, 2025

Traveling to Europe in the colder months doesn’t just let you escape the peak-season crowds in cities like Rome, Barcelona, and Athens. It also allows you to see some of the continent’s most breathtaking destinations in a new light.

When most people think of traveling to Europe, summer comes to mind – bustling streets, warm beaches, and lively festivals. But winter offers a completely different, yet equally enchanting, experience. Here are a few reasons to make your next European trip a wintry one…

Fewer crowds & lower costs

One of the biggest advantages of winter travel is avoiding the overwhelming crowds of tourists. Famous landmarks, often packed in the summer, become more accessible, allowing you to enjoy them at a leisurely pace. What’s more, flights, hotels, and attractions can be a lot more affordable than they are during the high season, making it a great time for budget-conscious travelers. Visiting places like the Alhambra in Spain or the Vatican in Italy without long waits is a rare treat.

Cozy, festive atmosphere

Winter in Europe brings a unique charm, with Christmas markets, festive lights, and cozy cafés offering warm drinks by the fireplace. The holiday season transforms city squares into winter wonderlands filled with the scent of roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, and seasonal delicacies. Cities like Ljubljana in Slovenia and Lisbon in Portugal embrace the season with festive markets and stunning light displays. Spain’s Three Kings' Day in January is a celebration worth experiencing and Venice’s Carnival in February is a magnificent spectacle of masks, costumes, and traditional parades.

Mild weather in Southern Europe

If you prefer milder temperatures, many parts of Southern Europe remain comfortably cool rather than bitterly cold. This makes sightseeing, outdoor activities, and even some beachside relaxation possible without the sweltering heat of summer. Destinations like the Amalfi Coast in Italy and Portugal’s Algarve offer stunning coastal views and peaceful walks without the summer rush. The Greek islands, often packed in peak months, offer a more authentic experience in winter, where you can enjoy the stunning whitewashed streets and local tavernas without the hustle and bustle.

Now that we’ve explained why Europe is so special in winter, let’s take a look at how to make the most out of your winter Euro trip…

1. A chance to really savor the history

Wander through historic streets and visit iconic sites without long queues. In cities like Rome, Venice, and Lisbon, you’ll get to appreciate the architecture, museums, and local culture in a much more relaxed setting. Athens, Greece, is another excellent option, where you can visit the Acropolis and ancient ruins with fewer tourists. Turkey’s Istanbul, with its stunning mix of Byzantine and Ottoman history, is even more magical in winter, offering a quiet yet vibrant charm.

2. Everything’s different in the off-season

Countries like Croatia, Greece, and Turkey offer breathtaking landscapes and rich history. While summer is their high season, winter allows for a more authentic experience. Stroll through Dubrovnik’s old town without the cruise ship crowds, explore Istanbul’s bazaars in relative peace, or visit Cappadocia’s dreamlike rock formations when they’re dusted with snow. Plitvice Lakes in Croatia transform into a frozen paradise in winter, with stunning ice formations and far fewer tourists.

3. Winter is … Festival time!

Many European cities come alive with winter celebrations. Portugal’s festive spirit lingers beyond Christmas, with vibrant markets and traditional New Year’s celebrations. In Italy, Venice’s famous Carnival in February adds a spectacular touch to winter travel. Spain’s Las Fallas festival in March is another thrilling event with incredible artistic displays and fireworks.

4. Put on your coat and get outside

If you love nature, winter hiking in Slovenia’s Julian Alps or Italy’s Dolomites offers a stunning snow-covered landscape. Lake Bled in Slovenia is particularly magical in winter, with its fairytale-like setting enhanced by frost and snow. For those seeking something milder, Portugal’s Algarve region provides a fantastic alternative with beautiful coastal hikes and fewer tourists. If skiing is your passion, the Italian Alps or Spain’s Sierra Nevada offer excellent slopes with fewer crowds than traditional Alpine resorts in France or Switzerland.

5. Soups, stews and pastas

Winter is the perfect time to sample heartwarming local cuisine. Think of warm, slow-cooked stews in Greece, rich Italian pasta dishes, Spanish churros with hot chocolate, or a comforting seafood feast along Portugal’s coast. Truffle season in Istria, Croatia, also offers a unique culinary experience for food lovers. In Turkey, winter is the best time to enjoy a hot, steamy bowl of mercimek çorbası (lentil soup) or sip on a traditional cup of salep, a warm milky drink flavored with orchid root.

6. Only in Winter

Beyond sightseeing and food, winter in Europe offers unforgettable experiences. Take a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia’s snow-covered landscape, soak in a traditional Turkish hammam in Istanbul, or explore the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı. In Spain, enjoy flamenco performances in a cozy, dimly lit venue while savoring a glass of local sherry. Meanwhile, in Italy, discover the charm of small, picturesque villages covered in a delicate layer of snow.
